Why we need hurricanes!!!
Posted by Dave Osterberg under Daily updates
I know that this next statement may not go well with many people, but here goes. We need to have hurricanes!!!! Now that your done throwing stuff at the computer let me explain why. During the summer months, the Earth heats up very unevenly. Down toward the equator becomes much hotter than the poles creating a huge heat imbalance. The Earth does everything it can to keep in balance, and hurricanes are natures way of creating a balancing act. Without getting to technical, The atmosphere attempts to remove this excessive amount of heat energy through latent heat release. A hurricane is essentially a massive heat engine that transfers the high oceanic heat content into the atmosphere by releasing that stored heat via condensation. Wow thats a mouthful. We’re not the only ones who experience hurricanes. In fact of all the tropical cyclones that form, the least amount form in the Atlantic/Caribbean, and Gulf of Mexico regions. The Eastern Pacific sees more, and the Western Pacific has the most. So this transfer of heat is going on all over the globe. The problem is that we have built up our coastlines so we are living right in their path. Even though accurate hurricane record may be at most 150-200 years, I am sure they have been around far longer than that.
Many people are always asking me how we can stop them. Cloud seeding? Giant film over the ocean? Bomb? And I tell everyone the same thing, we shouldn’t. Because if we did, then who knows what would happen with the Earth. If you unevenly heated the Earth, and never transferred the heat from the Equator to the poles, what would happen? Truthfully I don’t know, but I can tell you it wouldn’t be good. It could easily throw that worlds weather into chaos. Trade winds could change, climates could change, and maybe the tilt of the Earth gets thrown off. Again these are just theories, but I don’t think any of these would be good. What we need to learn how to do is try to harness the energy from a hurricane, because that would be worthwhile. I know many may disagree with me, but the Earth has been around a lot longer than us, and it always finds a way to keep itself in balance. I don’t wish them upon anyone, but I do understand their need in keeping our atmosphere and oceans in balance. It just one of Mother Natures ways of keeping things in check
